Thousands of women and infertile couples have become proud parents of beautiful , healthy babies, after discovering FSDW - and meeting their own DIY Baby Hero. FSDW- formerly sperm-donors-worldwide.com are useful websites created by Emma Hartnell-Baker, known as 'The Child Listener'
So what should you consider when deciding if you could be a private sperm donor- an FSDW 'DIY Baby Hero'?
The first thing to do is research your decision, and decide if you are ready to go down this route- if you become pregnant will you be ready emotionally, financially- do you have a good support network? Do you feel able to meet the needs of your child?
When you have decided that this is right for you, take your time finding the right donor. Your child will inherit a whole bunch of things from him- so be sure that you are a good match. By meeting him not only can you check that he was being truthful about his appearance, height, age group etc you can ask questions to see if you are on the same wave length intellectually. Is this someone you could potentially be friends with - do you have the same expectations- want the same things for the child> Have the same idea about your arrangement post-conception? In an ideal world, in my opinion as The Child Listener, you will choose someone who wants some involvement- even if its just a long distant uncle type role- think of what your child needs long term, rather than what you need. If this isnt some you want having a relationship with- in any capacity- why choose him as a donor?
Once youve met and talked about how you will do this, you need to use the free donor agreement document, available in the Member's Only Area, and get it notarised by a solicitor. Even though this isnt necessariliy legally binding- the judge would look at the best interes of the child in any case if you or the donor broke this agreement and took legal action- it goes along way to show your intention, and for you to get a favourable result. The law is very grey in this area as there have been very few cases- however private donor agreement is becoming more and more common, and this means questions and issues that need resolving legally, will have to happen. Do everything you can before you even start trying to become pregnant however, to ensure that problems dont arise in the future in your case. There are always ways to resolve issues amicably- especially if youve chosen a kind, reasonable DIY Baby Hero in the first place!
I would also strongly suggest that when you choose a donor, that you ask them how many women or couples they have helped, and how many they plan to help in the future. Ideally DIY Baby Heroes should be selective about who they donate to, and only donate to a few people who really need their help. Donors who donate to anyone who asks, or will have sex with them, and have not decided on an upper limit of women to impregnate should be avoided. Think of your child and the implications for the future- especially if he is donating to numerous women in one area.
I believe that women and infertile couples should have the right to become parents- regardless of age, fertility, financial or marital status or other, as long as they are well prepared for parenting- and able to meet the needs of their children.
DIY Baby Heroes are amazing men- could you be one?
Please doemail me with your questions!
